Document Summary
Temperament: early appearing stable individual differences in reactivity and self- regulation. Reactivity: quickness and intensity of emotional arousal. High heart rate in a 36 week old fetus means less consistent eating and sleeping in infancy. Easy (40%): generally calm, happy, regular sleeping and eating, adaptability, not easily upset. A new zealand study examined 3 year olds then later examined them at 21. This revealed that well-adjusted toddlers showed low levels of aggression in later life. Difficult (10%): often fussy, irregular in feeding and sleeping, fearful of new people and situations, easily upset by noise and commotion, high strung and intense reactions. The new zealand study showed children are more impulsive and thrill seeking. More likely to use alcohol, aggression, problems in relationships. Slow to warm up (15%): inactive and fussy, withdraw and react negatively to situations, reactions gradually become positive with exposure.
