Charles darwin: interested in natural world from an early age (father & grandfather were physicians, went to edinburgh to study medicine at 16. Learned taxidermy and natural history: cambridge years. Met john henslow, who became his mentor and gave charles invitation to go on the beagle: voyage of the beagle. Volunteer naturalist at age 22 aboard the beagle. Returned to london with thousands of skins, fossils, and notes: insights from voyage. While in asia he noticed diversity of species across different islands. Suggested idea that new species arose from old species. Survival of the fittest: wallace and concluded that species evolved but wasn"t sure how. Wrote new theory which he called survival of the fittest . Wallace asked darwin to forward manuscript to lyell. Lyell arranged for paper to be presented alongside one of darwin"s. On the origin of species published in 1859: wallace published on the malay archipelago in 1869 and dedicated it to charles.
