Site of cellular respiration and transformation of energy (atp) Contains prokaryotic ribosomes and dna (of prokaryotic origin) Endosymbiont theory -- mitochondria are remnants of eubacterial cells that took up residence in an ancestral eukaryotic cell. Plastids -- non-green site of photosynthesis -- chromoplasts & amyloplasts. Site of biosynthesis of fatty acid, starch & other important biomolecules. Plastids also contain a separate dna genome and ribosomes and multiple membranes. Plastids are remnants of photosynthetic bacterial cells that took up residence in an ancestral eukaryotic cell as a result of an additional endosymbiotic event.
