Functional density of proteins- proportion of amino acid sites that perform specific functions (substrate recognition, active site for catalysis, ligand binding, allosteric shift) General functions- charge, isoelectric point, solubility property of the protein, shared among many different amino acid sites evolve most slowly are those with high functional density. Uep- time needed for 1% amino acid sequence divergence between homologous proteins. Any evolution that can be explained by mutation and genetic drift alone is the most parsimonious explanation. Metapopulation- a large population subdivided geographically into many local demes.
