I. Ion Exchange Reactions
A. 3 Types of Inorganic Reactions
1. Ion Exchange Reactions
a. NaOH(aq) + AgNO3(aq) -> AgOH(s) + NaNO3(aq)
b. Na2CO3(s) + H2SO4(aq) -> Na2SO4(aq) + H20(l) + CO2(s)
2. Redox Reactions
a. Cu(s) + 2AgNO3(aq) -> Cu(NO3)2(aq) + 2Ag(s)
b. Zn(s) + H2SO4(aq) -> ZnSO4(aq) + H2(g)
3. Reactions involving complex ions
a. Complex Formation: AgOH(s) + 2NH3(aq) -> [Ag(NH3)]+OH-(aq)
b. Ligand substitution: Cu(H2O)62+ +4NH3(aq) -> Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2+ + 4H2O
B. Ion Exchange Reaction Parts
1. Molecular Equation: AgNO3(aq) + NaOH(aq) -> NaNO3(aq) + AgOH(s)
2. Ionic Equation: Ag+ + NO3- + Na+ + OH- -> Na+ + NO3- + AgOH(s)
a. Na+ and NO3- spectator ions: appear on both sides of the equation and are not
involved in the production of the solid, can cross out
3. Net ionic equation: Ag+ + OH- -> AgOH(s)
C. Ion Exchange Reactions
1. For an ion exchange reaction: AB(aq) + CD(aq) -> AD + CB
a. For this reaction to occur, AD and CB cannot both be soluble strong electrolytes
2. One of the products must be:
a. An insoluble compound (precipitate)
b. A weak or non electrolyte (such as water)
c. A compound that dissociates to form a gas (a covalent compound)
Ex: NH4OH H2O(l) + NH3(g)
Ex: H2CO3 H2O(l) + CO2(g)
3. Neutralization reactions are ion exchange reactions
a. Acid + Base = Water + Salt
4. The net ionic equation is always in terms of the major species of the reaction
a. Net ionic equations are not just for ion exchange reactions!
II. Acidity and Basicity
A. The P-Scale
1. pX = -log[X]
a. ex- pH=-log[H] or log[1/H]
2. The lower the [X], the higher the pX
a. [X] is the molar concentration of substance X
B. Acidity, Basicity, and pH
1. The ionization of water occurs for a very very small (0.000001%) amount of
dissociation
a. H2O -> H+ + OH-
2. In an acidic solution: [H+] > [OH-], pH < 7.00
3. In a neutral solution: [H+] = [OH-], pH = 7.00
4. In a basic solution: [H+] < [OH-], pH > 7.00
