Different voice onset times determine how you categorize a sound (ba/da) You don"t hear variations within the category; you just hear differences when categories. Formation of natural categories: for example, vegetables vs. animals > fish vs types of fish. Ex: you store a lot of info about the category insects -- then if you identify so insect, you bring up all the information you have stored in the insect category. Might be negative consequences when you lose ability to individualize -- but world. One of the first studies was by hull (1920) with chinese characters. Participants (english speakers) were presented chinese characters and were the label for each character.
