Physiological need creates an aroused tension state (a drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy the need. (hunger) Regulatory drives: associated with internal physiological need. Protect homeostasis: the body"s consistent, steady state. Lean people have more pyy and more pyy is released when eating as compared to obese people. Leptin: appetite suppressant secreted by fat cells. Obese patients generally will lose weight when given injections of leptin (only for obese). Sensory-specific satiety (varied foods = more reward value) Culture: certain foods are good to some but not to others. Social interaction: eat special types of food related to events. Weight will increase if a friend"s increases, or a friend"s of a friend increases. Rats motivated by electric shock to a specific part of the brain. (more powerful motivation than food or water). If blocked, won"t eat as much (not as enjoyable) Motivational needs are arranged hierarchically, from basic physiological needs to self-actualization.
