Social norms and conformity: extremes of conformity: e. g. nazis, solomon asch (1951) Brought various people into an experiment in which everybody was on asch"s team, except for one person. Told them they were here to test visual perception and judgement, shown a standard line and three lines of varying lengths and asked which is the same length. All of the confederates answered with a line that was clearly wrong. 37% of the individuals conformed to the incorrect answer. Other allies present --> if there is at least one other person that is willing to go against the group opinion, other people are more likely not to conform as well. Group size --> the bigger the group, the more likely one will conform (differences are only observable to a certain extent, plateaus around 6 and 7) Incorrect hypothesis: gender: stanley milgram (1963) -- obedience to authority.
