L33 Psych 315 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Implicit-Association Test, Cognitive Load
Document Summary
Discrimination- negative behavior towards a member of a group, simply because of his/her membership in that group. Stereotype is the cognitive aspect, it"s how you think about a member of a group. Prejudice is the affect (emotional) aspect, it"s how you feel towards a member of a group. Discrimination is the behavior aspect, it"s how you act towards a member of a group. Institutional discrimination- discrimination built into legal, political, social, and economic institutions. Behavior (actions discrimination), affect (feelings prejudice), and cognition (thoughts/beliefs stereotype) are all connected. People are primed (flashed for 200 ms) with two faces (a black man and a white man) and either a gun or a tool (. 5 second) People were more likely to associate the gun with the black man, but had trouble identifying when it was the white man. People were forced to answer quickly (high cognitive load) As a result, many people wrongly assumed that the tool was a weapon.
