Major controversy: nature vs. nurture: philosophy background, aristotle vs. plato. Aristotle (nurture) the child knows nothing. Plato (nature) the child just has to realize they already know: john locke. Innately endowed (with morals: historical background, industrial revolution. Children had been working in farms, not dealing with the kinds of injuries possible in textile mills. Because of abuse in industrial factories, revolutionized the way people thought about children and protecting them/not exposing them to danger during formative years: darwin and baby biographies. People started to think of childhood as being like evolution. Robert siegler (modern) bad strategies may first be years, we learn what strategies are better, and eventually we only use the best strategies; but under dire circumstances (i. e. exhaustion) we may make. Piaget wrote them about his own children. Able to see a pattern of change if you compare multiple biographies. Five theoretical perspectives: biological, gessell & lorenz, maturational theory.
