Hypothesis: adults and children engage in infant-directed speech because this makes it possible to accentuate stressed syllables (by allowing for exaggerated intonation). This type of speech should enhance second language learning too. Method: training: type of spoken chinese sentences, tested: targeted words, group 1: adult directed, group 2: infant-directed. Results: group 1: failed to learn any targets, group 2: correctly identified between 10% and 35% of the targets. Conclusions: answer to research question is yes. Method: exposure to novel label (9 presentations over 5 minutes: tested 24 hours later via multiple choice (pointing) Results: both groups learn object names easily. Conclusions: answer to research question yes. Strong correlation between vocabulary size and phonological memory ( ballop ) Fast mapping of meanings to nouns joint attention. Mervis and bertand (1994): infants who had not yet experiences noun explosion were followed closely until explosion began and found that it was accompanied by fast mapping.
