Lesbian and gay people have not been present throughout history until the development of capitalism. Led to myth of silence, invisibility, and isolation as essential characteristics of gay life. Gay men and lesbians always were and always will be. Children necessary for labor in order to keep family alive. Allows people to form communities based on interests and personalities leads to gay identity because when people congregate outside of the family, sexual expression becomes separated from reproduction. Not part of an identity, but rather an act for fetishism. Perhaps gay men should act more towards the lesbian identity to become more accepted: social idea that sex must involve a penis. Lessened stigma then for lesbian couples: foucoult -- discourse creates identity but also creates power dynamics. Adoption, non sexual situation where lesbians who could have biological children are going outside the norm.
