Sociological theories: functionalism theory, conflict theory, critical/cultural theories=important. Functionalist theory: whatever disrupts institutions is bad: ex. of sport promoting patriotism; national anthem before every game. Feminist theory 3 assumptions: human experiences are gendered, women are oppressed with patriarchy, individuals have a commitment to change those conditions. Conflict theory: validating prevailing myths of capitalism: survival of the fittest . Feminist theory: know three assumptions/argument that american experience is gendered. Sport as a source of deviance: maladaptive behaviors, can bring out the worst in people, ex. fighting on a hockey rink, boxing, football. European settler"s came to north america, sports were romanticized. Puritans: leisure was seen as sinful, no sports, low life expectancy. Roots of sports are in class structure; high class was first to have access to leisure activities/sports.
