American History X
The socialization process that worked for Derek and Danny Vinyard is culture influence
behaviors, George Herbert Mead’s Self Theory, and Cooley’s looking glass. Some examples that
follow are,
1. After Derek was released from jail, he went to the party with all the white supremacists to
tell them he wants nothing to do with the group anymore. When he told the group, he
almost got killed by some of the members.
2. When Derek’s father was alive, he spoke his views on African Americans at dinner one
night. The father’s views shaped Derek’s development on his views of hating on African
Americans. This showed Cooley’s looking glass because person's self grows out of
society's interpersonal interactions and the perceptions of others. Derek was praising Mr.
Sweeney, but his father was disappointed and explained his reason why he should not
admire him as a teacher.
3. The father was a police officer, which was killed on the job by African Americans.
Which also, increased Derek’s hatred on African Americans.
4. For Danny, looking at the George Herbert Mead model, Danny looks up to Derek after
his father passes away. With this model, the play stage suits how Danny acts. Danny was
taking on attitudes or roles of his parent and sibling.
