Stages: primary infection- 1 month after exposure, mono/flu like symptoms. Hiv test negative: cinical latency no symptoms at all, symptomatic disease positive hiv test. Early treatment with haart gretly increased survival time. If untreated 80-90% live about 10 years or less. Disabling/ life threatening illness caused by hiv or a cd4 t-lymphocyte count less than 200 with or without documented hiv infection: last stage of hiv infection. There is a declined incidence (amount of new infections during a certain time period) of people with hiv infections but prevalence of aids is up (the amount of total infections new and old) Men who have sex with men are the largest demographic group in the us to have. Having another sti also increases risk for hiv and vice versa. Pediatric hiv is very differnet than what it is in adults. Incubation/ survival time is much shorter for children. Able to get results in 1 hour.
