Document Summary
She pursues a goal: she wants to be part of society which is not possible without a husband. She talks with george because he is far away and it is easier. A play about frustration, real, raw and relatable. She is a hardworking black woman, looking for romantic love. Obstacles: feeling of insecurity and inferiority, she starts a long-distance relationship. She can"t read so mrs. van buren and mayme write the letters for her, she doesn"t write them. Her marriage with george fails and she is ashamed of it (people warned her) She can"t cheat on george with mr. marks because religion prohibits them of being together and his arranged marriage. Both appreciate the fabric = touch = sensuality, and the stories behind the fabric. She falls in love with george"s stories/ letter but he didn"t write them. Letters= mix of esther, mayme and mrs. van buren. The play is realist except after the wedding night.
