EDU407 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Phonics, Water Cycle
Document Summary
A highly systematic approach to literacy that is comprehensive. It does not equally combine equal amounts of whole language and equal amounts of phonics approach. It combines explicit instruction, guided practice where you are differentiating for small groups, collaborative learning process usually in a reading workshop, independent reading and writing. Balanced literacy is important and appropriate for struggling student because it is balanced and there is not one component that is overemphasized or underemphasized. Anecdotal- not so much wrong or right more so of an observation as students participate in activities. Observation include taking notes, doing running records, examination of students works perhaps in a portfolio or project-based learning, checklists to monitor progress in students learning or a rubric to asses students writing. Five ways of how to approach english learners. English language learners need explicit instruction when developing academic language, spend more time teaching unfamiliar vocabulary related to reading and writing.
