Document Summary

Research about the process of learning to read. Phonemic awareness- phoneme is the smallest unit of sound. Awareness of sound is knowing that each letter or combination of letters makes a sound and how these sounds are blended and used in words. Then we go from sound level to word level- how do we recognize words, decode, phonics, and alphabetic principle, and then go into graphemes which are letters. We have to look at how the brain takes in sounds and words and makes meanings out of them. Previewing texts, having gallery walks, picture walks, textbook walks, how to paraphrase and summarize, how to predict what will happen next, how to guess from visuals, content, or photos, how to skim and scan texts for information. National reading panel was made to answer and define the components of reading and answer the question what do good readers do.
