KINESIOL 2Y03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Fluid Mosaic Model, Biological Membrane, Membrane Protein
Document Summary
The objectives of this lecture are to use microscopic images to study the structure and function of a biomembrane; to describe the fluid mosaic model; and finally to complete a short self review of the organelles of the cell. We will look at organelle structure and function in more detail in upcoming lectures. Slide 3 using microscopic techniques, we are able to study the structures of the cell. By separating the interior from the exterior, the cell can create a unique internal environment. In this cartoon different molecules are represented by circles of different colours. On the left, red and green molecules are inside the cell, while blue and grey molecules are outside. Molecularly, these environments are completely different from one another. On the right, we can see that biomembranes also define internal microenvironments by surrounding organelles. The function of the organelle membrane is to provide the means of establishing the difference and also of maintaining it.
