PSYC 344 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pineal Gland, Thyroid, Adrenal Gland
Document Summary
Hypothalamus- portion of brain that helps regulate es and connects ns w es. Pituitary gland: controls a lot of es. Thyroid gland: regulates growth and metabolism, produces thyroxin. Gonads (ovaries & testes): secrete sexual reproduction hormones or development of sexual reproductive organs. Pancreas not producing enough insulin (type 1) Bodies not responding to insulin properly (type 2) Thymus- makes hormones that control maturation of hormones, connect es w immune system. Bone marrow lymphocytes : white blood cells produced in bone marrow that defend against antigens. Expand during immune response and destroy foreign particles. Natural killer (nk) =- cells that patrol body to look for diseased cells to kill. Introduces substance that can be encountered and body prepares to handle it. B and t cells recognize and attack specific antigens. When body uses nonspecific immune reaction when not needed-- allergies, autoimmune disease. Ex: type 1 diabetes, celiac, psoriasis, ms, ect. Made their lives harder-- short term memory loss (biological)
