Development of pleura: as growth occurs, the viscera tend to move forward into the enlarging cavity, notice that it"s still a single membrane all the way around the cavity. Early in development, viscera develop somewhere in body wall (usually the posterior body wall) behind a cavity that is lined by a layer of cells which form a membrane. As the viscera grows and occupies the size of cavity, you will get the appearance of double layered membrane parietal/visceral layer. Sensory nerve supply to the parietal pleura is derived from the nerve supply of the body wall and diaphragm intercostal n. and phrenic n. Shares innervation with the part that it lines (body wall and diaphragm): e. g. 1. Pain from costal part of parietal pleura will be referred to the relevant thoracic dermatomes: e. g. 2. Pain from diaphragmatic part of parietal pleura will be referred to the dermatomes supplied by c3-5 (origin of phrenic nerve).
