PSY343H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Therapy
Document Summary
One of the fundamental assumptions of all cbt therapies is that beliefs, behaviors and emotions (+ physical reactions) are all linked to one another and they influence one another. This diagram is portrayed in the sense that the arrows have two ends since they react with one another. In therapy, client talks about feelings, the thoughts and their behaviors. Goal of cbt is to address any negative thinking in order to then address the behaviors and feelings. Assumes that cognitions, emotions, and behaviors interact and have a reciprocal cause-and- effect relationship. Teaches that our emotions stem mainly from our beliefs that influence the evaluations, interpretations, and reactions to life situations. Clients learn to identify the interplay of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and to identify and dispute irrational beliefs maintained by self-indoctrination. Clients learn to replace detrimental ways of thinking with effective and rational cognitions. Main features and assumptions of rbet are that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors interact.
