HSCI10171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Lymphatic Vessel, Loose Connective Tissue, Extracellular Fluid
Document Summary
Lymphatic system similar form to cardio vascular system. Function: collects & returns interstitial fluid and leaked plasma proteins back to the blood to maintain fluid balance, fat absorption lymphatic system absorbs fats from the digestive tract, defense immune stystem. Checks for foreign substances (lymph nodes: a one way system that returns fluids that have leaked from blood and/or produced in the cells back to the blood, composed of 3 parts: Fluid carried by lymphatic vessels (clear fluid similar to interstitial fluid) 1: bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, cell debris. Circulaton of lymph: 50% of the total blood protein leaks out of capillaries into the interstitial fluid and ultimately returns to the blood by the lymphatic vessels. Fluid leaks into lymph capillaries from interstitial spaces - high pressure to low mini valves to prevent fluid from leaking back to interstitial space. Lymph travels towards heart to go back into blood stream.
