Frankenthaler"s innovation is kind of positioned as an important precursor to welcome in the 1960s: this becomes a hugely important and influential theme throughout the 60s. The paradox of a radical sense of depth in an object that is clearly 2 dimensional becomes sort of the focus of this kind of color fill of abstraction. R. mutt, fountain, 1917; piero manzoni, merda d"artista, 1961; bruce nauman, Self-portrait as a fountain, 1966: reconfiguring the object; reconfiguring the spectator. But in fact, they have a lot in common. Untitled, 1969: all three of these artists we"re looking here are all at the point where it"s really about production.
