The art of the ancient near east: agriculture, writing, and religion. Visc1001 module 3 lecture 1: mesopotamia, means between the rivers , refers to the land mass between the tigris and the euphrates rivers; correlates to modern day iraq and syria. 4000-3000= smaller agriculture villages evolved into cities, with established social hierarchies based on specialized skills. Overtime, these young cities amalgamated into city states and the most common form of government was a kingship. In 3200 bce, uruk was a thriving settlement with a population of about 40,000 people. (relative to the global populations at that point in time, 40,000 people was considered a large settlement) Ruins of anu ziggurat and the white temple of uruk in uruk(capital of sumer, present-day iraq: c. 3300-3000 bce, dedicated to the sky god anu, white temple. Small rectangular structure with white washed walls placed on top of ziggurat.
