While the roman systems of belief prevailed, there were other religions that were practiced within the empire. Shift from the polytheiestic belief to monotheiestic religion. Judaism and christianity began to be practiced during the 3rd and 4th century common era. The jewish population of the town converted a house into a religious space. Judaism: monotheiestic religion that dates back to the second millenium. They believed that the gods made a covenant (agreement) with their ancestors (hebrews) that they are god"s chosen people. The synagogues are sites of religious gatherings where the torahs are studied. Torah: first five books of the hebrew bible, teachings sent by god to the prophet moses who wrote them down. The synagog has a niche for the torah at the centre of the wall. The niche is called the torah niche , where scrolls are kept. Paintings cover all the wall and are scenes from the torah.
