Document Summary

The first sentence of the first book contains aristotle"s definition of goodness. He believes that every action and goal should be for the greater benefit. When we study the meaning of the word "good" as it is used in our daily lives, this viewpoint becomes clear. The satisfaction of one need is then regarded good if it serves as a conduit for meeting another need, and this is good if it serves to meet yet another. This process must eventually reach a point when it is no longer a means to an end in and of itself. The highest good, according to aristotle, is the ultimate objective or goal of life. The study of ethics is intended to reveal the nature of this highest good and to determine the best means to achieve it. Happiness is referred as the highest good or the ultimate objective for human life.
