Document Summary

In this paper, thomson argues that women should have the right to abortion because they have a right to their own bodies. Essentially she says that if another person needs to use your body to stay alive, they don"t have a right to it. It"s kind to offer your body to them so they can stay alive, but they don"t have that right to your body the same way you do. Thomson basically wants to draw the conclusion that a fetus does not have a right to a woman"s body. Even if it"s assumed for the sake of argument that a fetus is a person from moment of conception, nothing is proved on whether or not abortion is permissible. One would have to show that the life of the fetus outweighs both the mother"s autonomy over her body, and her own right to life. Thomson provides two different definitions of the right to life.
