Document Summary

Construct validity: how well the researcher manipulate/measure the variables. Does not always equate to meaningfulness however. A multifaceted program causes progress for the very poor: evidence from 6. Families were checked on by researchers after being given aid, but not checking for other reasons why they may be doing better. Not ensuring construct validity or internal validity. Three criteria needed to support a causal claim. Temporal precedence: one variable occurs then the other. No alternative explanations: a third variable (confound) could not account for the association. How well a study rules out alternative explanations. Strong internal validity can be achieved by manipulating the variable that is hypothesized to cause change in another variable. Looked at the aid given by multifaceted programs (targeting the poorest members in a community and provides a multitude of aid forms) when compared to no aid given. Alternative explanations for results would emerge and weaken internal validity if there was just one country.
