Document Summary

Zen is on the side of the power of the self - based on sitting meditation. Contemplation and action: dualism since quiescence and action are the same. Things are empty because they are not fully real or unreal. Buddha considered his teachings to be the middle ground. The first extreme is to say there is nothing , no real in the world. The other extreme is eternalism - full reality, error from buddhist point of view because there is no such thing as having independent existence. The only way to liberate oneself from the cycle of suffering is to liberate oneself from craving the desires is to understand that things are not truly real and that they are empty. We free ourselves of craving when we understand that things are not fully real. Emptiness - there is no selfhood, no independent beings on their own, existence/network of codependent relationships.
