Race: socially defined category based on real or perceived biological differences between groups of people. Race is not a genetically defining characteristic; it is a socially defined characteristic. Social construct: a social mechanism, concept, or category created and developed by a society which can change. How race can be arbitrary, vary from society to society, and change over time. It is a socially defined concept/construct that is dependent on the society in which it exists; i. e. , society defined/determines how the concept will be viewed. In the united states, we have historically focused on both real biological differences (skin, color) and perceived differences (intelligence, athleticism, etc) Ethnicity: socially defined category based on common ancestry or cultural heritage (such as language, religion, nationality, customs, etc) Focused on cultural orientations/behaviors which are assumed to be inherited. Can be displayed or hidden, depending on the individual. Many ethnic groups are whites identified by their native country.
