Early modern europe consisted of "estates", not modern "states" Military class: making wars was the main occupation of european rulers. Loose and unstable systems of 16th and 17th c europe not modern states but estates. Kings and princes of political landscapes, owners of land = power. Land was the only source of wealth in early europe. Henry ii (1559) --> francis ii (1544-60) sickly teenager died within a year of becoming king.
