The church as the community of all believers. Church as the institution of the belief and conduct of all christians. Members of the church are limited to those who run the church (the officials). Undertook the work of active ministry lived under a rule of life. The pope is the highest of bishop - his authority called the papacy. The bishop who gives the dioceses of the church. Roman heritage - christianity became the authority of rome. The order of st benedict (benedict of nursia (d. c. 550)) No monks had private ownership, but monastic houses were wealthy landowners. Monks not ordained, treated as though they were priests. Communities of monks grew outside the ecclesiastical hierarchy, became an interictal part of the church. Became abbot, some monks found he was too harsh and wanted to get rid of him. Eventually left the monastery and started his own order. Year 1000 many communities took on benedict"s order and rule or life.
