LAC 1000C Lecture Notes - Tautavel Man, Homo Erectus, Future History
Document Summary
You might be surprised to learn that france has been inhabited for nearly half a million years by at least three distinct species of human, two of whom originated in africa. The first humans to move out of africa and into europe and asia were an archaic species known as homo erectus; Tautavel man, who lived 450,000 years ago, is an example of this species. About 200,000 years ago, a new species appeared in europe and asia, which many anthropologists believe may have evolved from homo erectus -the neanderthals. The neanderthals were a very successful species until the arrival of homo sapiens (that"s us). H. sapiens migrated out of africa around 60,000-70,000 years ago, maybe even earlier) and reached europe by about 40,000 years ago. These early modern humans co-existed with neanderthals for a while and eventually achieved dominance; the neanderthals disappeared around 25,000 years ago, for reasons that are not entirely clear.
