Document Summary

Explain what is happening at the molecular level that accounts for this difference. See instructions for the diffusion lab exercise on the next page. Lab 1: diffusion of molecules in a gas and a liquid: diffusion in a gas. We will observe the diffusion of two different gases in a closed glass tube. Ammonium hydroxide (nh4oh) will be dropped onto a cotton ball on one end of the tube and hydrochloric acid (hcl) will be dropped onto a cotton ball on the other end. Think about why we use a glass tube and how this experiment can inform us about the relative rates of diffusion of these two gases. Molecular weight and temperature, and concentration of the gas. The hcl weighs heavier than the nh3 which correlates with the rate of diffusion. The heavier the gas, the slower rate of diffusion and the lighter the gas, the faster the rate of diffusion.
