Document Summary

Bangladeshi people protesting to save the sundarbans. U. n. 2015 climate change conference in paris, france. American college students pushing for divestment of school endowment funds from fossil fuels. Over the course of history, humans have organized themselves politically to help their groups survive and better their communities. How considered too simplistic by modern anthropologists, the earlier generation of political anthropologists classified political systems into four basic types: Band: a small, kinship-based group of food foragers who move over a particular territory while hunting and gathering. Bands regularly broke up and re-formed depending on time of year, hunting and ritual cycles, and conflicts. Decisions were made primarily by consensus, stratification of wealth and power was minimal, and active cooperation was required. Tribes: a culturally distinct population organized around villages, kin groups, clans, and lineages, often comprised of several bands, that imagined itself as one people descended from common ancestors.
