SOCI 1001 Chapter Notes -Absolute Threshold, Neural Adaptation, Stirrup
Document Summary
When sensory information is detected by a sensory receptor. Transduction: the conversion from sensory stimulus energy to action potential. Refers to the way sensory information is organized, interpreted, and consciously experienced. Bottom-up processing: refers to the fact that perceptions are built from sensory input. Top-down processing: how we interpret those sensations which are influenced by our available knowledge, our experiences, and our thoughts. Although our perceptions are built from sensations, not all sensations result in perception. Describe the concepts of absolute threshold and difference threshold. Absolute threshold: refers to the minimum amount of stimulus energy that must be present for stimulus to be detected 50% of the time. Subliminal messages: receiving messages, but we are not consciously aware of it. Just noticeable difference (jnd)/difference threshold: how much difference in stimuli is required to detect a difference between them. Discuss the roles attention, motivation, and sensory adaptation play in perception. We don"t perceive stimuli that remain relatively constant over prolonged.
