When we want to test whether a set of observed values are in agreement with those expected on the basis of some theories or hypothesis. The statistic provides a measure of agreement between such observed and expected frequencies. In genetics it is applied to detect linkage. A very powerful test for testing the significance of the discrepancy between theory and experiment was given by prof. karl pearson in 1900 and is known as chi-square test of goodness of fit .
