BTNY 11000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Perilla Frutescens, Plant Morphology, Dicotyledon
Document Summary
Plant morphology refers to the external structure and form of the plant body. Plants are composed of only three organs (root, stem & leaf), and each organ has specific characteristics which distinguishes it from the other organs. Develop and apply careful observational skills in order to identify the key structural features that distinguish roots, stems and leaves of monocot and dicot plants. The bottom of textbook page 9-4 provides a review of the 3 plant organs. Plant growth is initiated at the primary meristems found at the tips of roots and stems (figs 9. 12 & 9. 13 on pages 9-11 & 9-12). Your ta will lead a review using grocery store samples: stems & leaves. Stems are composed of internodes and nodes which are the regions where leaves and buds attach as seen in figure 9. 14 on page 9-12. A stem will always have nodes and internodes.
