Lincoln was put in place while the war was going on. They did this because they needed someone to keep the union together just in case anything was to happen. Lincoln wanted to win the war so badly to put this in place. Wanted to convince people in the south and in his party. Main idea: stop the south from fighting. Wanted to get south states back into the union as quickly as possible. Under lincoln"s plan 4 states came back. Ran for press in 1864: adrew johnson, changed name to union party he was a southerner and democrat. He hated the fine southern gentlemen, he thought they were treson. He would hang them because they were wealthier than him. He wouldn"t be nice to people that owned slaves. He eventually put together his own reconstruction policy. Significant difference << #2 of johnson"s reconstruction. He wanted to target the rich and mess with their minds.
