Document Summary
You yawn and you hear a popping sound as your mouth locks in open position. What you need to know about the jaw condition called tmj disorder. The temporomandibular joint (tmj) is one of the most complex and most used joints in the body. Disorders of this joint are complex and can be hard to identify and treat. Also known collectively as temporomandibular joint syndrome, these disorders are sometimes referred to as tmj, tmjd, or tmd, tmj disorders affect women of childbearing age more often than any other group. The tmj is found just in front of the ears, where the jaw bone (mandible) meets the temporal bone of the skull. The joint moves in two ways: a hinge motion, and a sliding motion. Both allow us to open our mouths wide and for our jaws to make all the various motions that accompany actions like talking, singing, shouting, coughing, chewing, and yawning.
