Even though it might look like it, being a dictator is very expensive because a lot of money goes into trying to maintain legitimacy and also to repress public opinion. This has created a theory by the rational choice theorists called the dictator dilemma. The dictator dilemma is when an authoritarian regime repression breeds fear among the citizens therefore it becomes very di cult for the dictator to gauge the amount of support they actually have. In other to reduce the dictator"s dilemma, the dictators allow for stronger institutions in other to get access to the information of where the citizens stand and also it increases legitimacy by providing services to the citizenry. Putin does not create a purely authoritarian regime in other to prevent the problems that come with the dictator dilemma. The future stability and success of putin"s regime could in shambles after recent trends.
