Document Summary
Sensation: detection of physical energy emitted or reflected by objects. Occurs when the energy in the external environment or the body stimulates receptors in the sense organs. Stimulus is something that causes a reaction. Perception: the process by which the brain organizes and interprets sensory information. Ex) petting a cat would send receptors to show that the cat is fluffy. )-> neural impluses-> brain (visual, auditory, olfactory areas) The smallest quantity of physical energy that can be reliably detected by an observer. Vison- a candle flame seen from 30 miles away in a clear, dark night. Hearing- a tick of a watch at 20 feet. Smell- one drop of perfume throughout a three-room apartment. Taste- one teaspoon of water in two gallons of water. Touch- a bee s wing falling on your cheek from a height of about half an inch. The reduction or disappearance of sensory responsiveness when stimulation is unchanging or repetitious.
