Document Summary
Concept: is the mental representation of an object, event, or idea. Rule-based categorization: categorizing objects or events according to a certain set of rules or by a specific set of features, or definitions. Graded membership: the observation that some concepts appear to make better category members than others; not accounted for rule based categorizations. Sentence appears in front of volunteers and they have to answer yes or no fast, reaction time is observed. Some members of category are recognized faster. Best examples influence categorization, even if both are same in correctness. Ex. sparrow vs. penguin is a bird. Mental representations of categories: based on overall similarities of shape or function of few major distinctions of items. Exemplar: a specific example that best represents a category. Prototype: is a mental representation of an average category member. Can be thought of as an image that combines typical features of category.
