APPH 1040 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Neuroplasticity, Sleep Onset, Memory Consolidation
Document Summary
60% of us college students are poor sleepers. Getting enough sleep when u learn sumn is more important than getting enough sleep before a quiz/assessment. Lack of sleep affects mental health (stats are for one night of lack of sleep) In evolution, creatures inactive at night were less likely to die from predators. Sleep is to reduce one"s energy demand during a part of the day. Night is when it"s least efficient to hunt for food. Supported by the fact that the body has decreased metabolism during sleep (up to 10%) Sleep lets the body repair+replete necessary cellular components that become depleted during the day. Sleep is necessary for brain reorganization n growth. As # of sleep hrs increases, time in rem sleep increases. Too little sleep potentially depriving urself of essential sleep. Characterized by trouble w one of these: 30+ mins to fall back asleep after waking up in night. Brain fails to tell respiratory muscles to breathe.
