Example: durkheim would attribute the success of civil rights legislation to the moral force that comes from the belief that it is wrong to favor one race against another. Societies change to compete more effectively; strong functionalist tone; history is an inevitable path of progress. Unless we humans control our passions, we become slaves to them. Law and morality provide external constraint on our desires.
