Document Summary

Biologists ask questions, develop hypotheses, make predictions, and collect data by careful observation and experiment. Organisms include bacteria, archaea, protists, plants, fungi, & animals. Cells are the smallest living unit of an organism. All living cells are surrounded by a selectively permeable membrane that controls what enters & leaves the cell. Some cells have parts called organelles that perform different functions e. g. chloroplasts in plants make sugars. The simplest cells are described as prokaryotic. These cells do not have membrane-bound nucleus and organelles. More complex cells are described as eukaryotic. These cells have membrane- bound nucleus and organelles. Found in plants, animals, protists & fungi. Sum of all the chemical reactions in an organism. Sunlight is the ultimate energy for life on earth. Photoautotrophs use sunlight to make food (photosynthesis) Chemoautotrophs use chemicals such as iron & sulfur as their energy source. Aerobic: releasing the chemical energy stored in foods in the presence of oxygen.
