Document Summary

Other than yogurt, list two food sources of probiotic microorganisms. Describe two ways probiotic microorganisms may work to support immune health: probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics. Probiotics live microorganisms with positive effects on human health: bacteria: lactobacillus, lactococcus, and streptococcus. Prebiotics ingredients (typically carbohydrates) not well digested by human enzymes but serve as fuel for beneficial bacteria in the gut fructooligosaccharides: short chains of carbohydrates broken down and used for energy. Synbiotics food products or supplements that contain both probiotics and prebiotics. Postbiotics: metabolic products of probiotic microorganisms, the gut microbiota is a diverse community. Human gut: at birth is sterile, soon exposed to community of microorganisms, colonizing gi tract. Microbiota varies from person to person: 500 different strains identified in human colon, most have about 160 strains. Healthy gut microbiota is crucial for proper immune system development and maintenance. Exposure of galt to microorganisms promotes maturation of immune cells.
