After countries receive their independence from western colonization and imperialism, there tends to be a power struggle that leads to civil unrest and/or reliance on western nations. From civil unrest and western reliance, these countries face two long-term effects today: instability and challenges in development. During its rule, the belgians favored the tutsi minority over the hutu. Because of favoritism, the hutus revolted, forcing the tutsi monarch into exile and causing numerous tutsis to flee rwanda. After rwanda received its independence, there was a power struggle that resulted in more civil and racial unrest. When the president of rwanda died in a plane crash, complete anarchy occurred: the hutus slaughtered and raped countless tutsis. Hutus used broadcasting, telling other hutus to murder their tutsi neighbors.
