HHP 4250 Lecture Notes - Homeothermy, Thermostat, Vasodilation
Document Summary
Homeotherm is a constant body core temperature that a human or animal maintains. In order for the core temp to remain constant the amount of heat lost must match the amount of heat gained. During exercise body temp is regulated by making adjustments in the amount of heat that is lost. Deep body temperatures can be measured by mercury thermometers through the rectum, ear or esophagus. Skin temperature can be measured by placing temperature sensor on the skin at various locations. List and discuss the 4 mechanisms of heat loss. Radiation is in the form of infrared rays. Conduction is the transfer of heat from the body to the molecules of cooler objects in contact with its surface. Convection is heat loss in which heat is transmitted to either air or water molecules in contact with the body. Vaporation is transferred from the body to water on the surface of the skin.
